Why these books have influenced me?
Reading Dumas’s Three Musketeers in my youth, D’Artagnan inspired me
to boast, as we, all bold champions of Gascony did, with impetus.
Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men depicts two travelling workers,
in the Depression and deals with loneliness and prejudice.
I felt despondent that Lennie was crushed by society.
In Small Island, I liked Andrea Levy’s rendering of
her father’s upfront Jamaican speech. Her parents
disembarked in the England they had perceived
as the ‘Mother Country’ to find the Mother
didn’t want them. These books show
the worth of compelling characters
who use honest language, and of
‘belonging’ in story-telling.
