The woman with the harsh voice

The woman with the harsh voice

As a council staff member, I knew of this tall lady who played the piano

in the city concerts. One day I heard her speak and realised that she

hollered rather than spoke. Her voice was sharp, sounding irritable.

She stood straight in front of me as I walked past and started

to harangue me.

The first time she complained,

‘Does council realise how inconvenient it is that all the cafés

in this town are closed after two pm, at the very time when

people need a cup of tea when they’ve finished at the market.’

The following occasion she protested,

‘Parking here has become so very frustrating that

people will stop shopping at the market from now on,

and no doubt council will regret that.”

Letting her talk, I listened politely. If I tried to suggest an alternatives

she raised her voice, reiterating her point of view and whatever

I tried to assert after that, she’d face me to utter,

‘And since you work for council, just tell them!’

If however I managed to change the subject, I could even risk a joke

about her small three-wheeled car, which made her smile.

That gave me the chance to talk of a forthcoming

concert, but she always was the one to end

the conversation with an abrupt,

‘Well. I am off.’

Her voice always seemed to retain

the sharpness of someone

who insisted on never

to be ignored.

  ‘Bien. Je vous quitte !’

Sa voix retenait toujours la brusquerie

d’une personne qui insistait

qu’on ne l’ignore jamais.

                                         A High Five: Five Senses
Five Years. Happy 2025

Best wishes to you at this turning point.
What did you do five years ago ?
What will you do in five years’ time?
I hope to follow the five senses of life.
Wish me luck

Time for my eyes to look around?
I scan my world and see the friends that are near me

Is my wish now to taste?
I relish the food and enjoy eating what’s good for me

Am I ready to sense aroma?
I spread fragrances and take in the scent around me

Do I have a feeling to touch things?
I pat textures and feel the kind surfaces that I'm able to stroke

Do I have the need to hear sounds?
I listen to noises, and heed the gentle murmurs surrounding me.

Happy New 2025 to all

Joyeux Nouvel An 2025 à tous

Success and Failure/Succès et difficultés

Best and Worst features ?

Put things off? I don’t. I move instantly.
I improvise and wing it. I get on well
with people. At a friend’s I tidy up
her magazines by date. I insist
she gets rid of some. Then we
both burst out laughing over
last year’s horoscope
and we have fun.

What’s my worst feature? Telling stories, is one,
I ramble and have no sense of timing when
I share a joke. My abrupt ending comes
too soon and nobody gets it. I may
well get a sympathetic smile,
but there’s a catch: people
aren’t sure what to
make of me.

Qualités ou Défauts ?

Procrastiner ?
dernier.

sourire sympathique,
mais l’ennui c’est
que les gens se
demandent
qui je suis.
