I am a French-born Australian linguist who loves writing about multicultural experiences. Taught English in Zambia and Papua New Guinea, gained a Doctorate with UPNG. In Western Australia I worked with migrants and Indigenous communities in Kalgoorlie and Roebourne. In charge of Amnesty International WA, then moved to Adelaide. Short-listed by The Human Rights Commission for the Literature NF Award for the anthology I edited with the Multicultural Writers Association of Australia, I later published my memoir. Volunteered with the Writers Centre, became active with PEN.

‘Where’s your home’, he asks? ‘Where did you really come from?’
Does he want to know where I was born or is he asking
About the difficulties of life?
Does he fancy I travelled from a puzzling A straight to a familiar Z?
Can I tell him of which place I’ve lived in?
Why does he care of the locales I’ve occupied?
Why trouble him with my early struggles?
I’ll give him a quick review of my early sites
Then I’ll ask him to my current place, the home
Where I can with conviction spin a congenial yarn with him.

‘D’où viens-tu’ ? il demande. ‘D’où arrives-tu vraiment’ ?
Veut-il savoir où je suis née ?
Ou demande-t-il à connaitre mes difficultés dans la vie ?
Est-ce qu’il pense que j’ai voyagé d’un A étonnant à un Z ordinaire ?
De quel endroit où j’ai habité vais-je lui parler ?
Qu’est ce qui l’intéresse sur les territoires que j’ai occupés ?
Pourquoi l’inquiéter de mes ennuis de début ?
Je lui ferai un résumé rapide de mes localités initiales.
Et je l’inviterai chez moi, à la maison où je pourrai
En toute confiance avoir un échange honnête avec lui.
I’m not interested in tidying the house. I’d rather my desk
looked constantly in use. I don’t tidy all items away.
That applies to my pens and my phone. I waste a bit of time
calling the phone, but I can always find a pen.
Beauty isn’t a priority. I don’t use make-up, not that
I hate it. It’s just I don’t make time to apply any.
I have no overlap with the army, or the armed forces.
I am anti-militarist. I don’t follow war memories or
memorials. Everyone has an ancestor that suffered
in a war. It wasn’t personal.

Etre nette à la maison ne m’intéresse pas. Je préfère
que mon bureau donne un effet d’ activité constante.
Je ne range pas toujours tout. C’est le cas pour mes
stylos et mon portable. Je perds un peu de temps à
appeler mon portable mais je trouve toujours un stylo.
La beauté n’est pas une priorité pour moi. Je ne me mets
pas de maquillage, ce n’est pas que je déteste ça, c’est
simplement que je ne perds pas de temps à m’en mettre.
Je n’ai aucun chevauchement d’intérêt avec l’armée.
Je suis antimilitariste. Je ne m’intéresse ni aux
souvenirs de guerre ni aux évènements qui les
commémorent. Tout le monde a un ancêtre qui a
souffert pendant une guerre. Ce n’est pas personnel.

Am I too late when I want to buy blank pages to punch
into a leather diary and will I find an ink bottle
to use with my fountain pen? Can I still print
my old pictures in a photoshop?
Will I happen upon a suitcase
with a magazine slot
on the outside?
Have I jumped the gun
when buying .5 or .7 leads
for my retractable pencils?
Where can I source refills for my biros?
Yet I’ve taken to laminating photos and online
drawing on computer screens. But can I ever pencil-in
old-fashioned crosswords after Wordle came into frenzy?

Pour mon journal en cuir et trouverais-je un encrier
Pour mon stylo à plume ? Puis-je encore imprimer
Mes vieilles photos en librairie ?
Pourrais-je trouver une valise
A poche externe pour journal?
Ai-je donc bien dépassé le cap
En achetant crayons à rétracter
Avec plomb du numéro .5 ou .7
Il y a-t-il encore des recharges
Pour mes stylos à bille ?
Je me mets à laminer
Et dessine sur écran
Pourrais-je encore

Child labour

With the present dramatic destructions of lives and cultures, borders and
buildings we commemorate this week The Pax Cultura Pact signed in 1935
by ethnic Russian Roerich with FD Roosevelt ‘for protection of cultural
property during armed conflicts.’
In 2001 the UN instituted Diversity Da , a time for Cultural Diversity
for Dialogue and Development for people to understand, value and share information on one another’s Cultural worth and treasures. This day was set after the destruction of the statues of Buddha,in Bamiyan, Afghanistan.

Suivant les évènements actuels de destructions dramatiques de nos vies,
cultures, frontières et établissements officiels nous reconnaissons cette
semaine Le Pacte de Culture de Pax signé en 1935 par Nicholas Roerich,
personne d’origine Russe, avec le Président Roosevelt ‘pour la protection
des propriétés culturelles pendant conflits armés.’
En 2001 Les Nations Unies ont institué une Journée de Diversité Culturelle pour Dialogue et Développement afin d’interpréter, d’évaluer et de partager avec tous nos trésors culturelles. Cette journée a été crée à la suite de la destruction des statues de Budha à Bamiyan en Afghanistan.

Happy World Radio Day
One morning in 1969 in Zambia I entered my classroom at the remote
Mwinilunga High School which had no television or electricity, with a
two-band battery radio so that my students would hear the momentous
moon landing. The BBC crackle was bad. I switched over to a French-
speaking station. The radio announcer’s voice came through the static.
I could just hear the French version of the astronaut’s words and
translated for my students:
‘One small footstep for man and a giant footstep for humanity’.
The class cheered, not at my translation, but because Neil Armstrong
walked on the Moon.

Un jour en 1969 en Zambie, je suis rentrée dans ma classe à Mwinilunga
High School, école secondaire isolée ou il n’y avait ni télévision ni
électricité. Je tenais à la main ma radio pour faire écouter à mes étudiantes
l’atterrissage sur la lune. Puisque la BBC faisait trop de craquements,
j’avais changé pour écouter une station en Français. Ayant réussi à entendre
la voix d’un commentateur malgré la statique, j’ai pu écouter la version
française des mots de l’astronaute et je les ai traduits pour mes étudiantes:
‘One small footstep for man and a giant footstep for humanity’.
La classe a applaudi pas ma traduction mais le fait que Neil Armstrong avait marché sur la Lune.
